The Doppelgangers are BACK!

My "DOPPELGANGERS" are back!
I’ve been working on this series of quick watercolor paintings for over 3 years now, and I am finally close to completing the collection with almost 200 portraits of my favorite movie monsters, villains and weirdos. The whole collection will be featured in my upcoming “Doppelgangers” book, available sometime this year. And additionally, 60 of my most popular Doppelgangers are now available to purchase online exclusively at ZEROFRIENDS.

ZEROFRIENDS x SF GRAND OPENING!

In addition to The Giants, The Chronicle, The Golden Gate Bridge, Robin Williams, Gay Marriage and the Zodiac Killer, San Francisco now has ONE more cool thing: US!!!!
Please join us THIS SATURDAY, March 16th, as we open the doors to our brand new retail store right in the heart of the Lower Haight district of San Francisco, right around the corner from Upper Playground!

But, as usual, simply opening the doors and asking for patronage would be silly. So instead we will be respectfully celebrating and asking you to come by and hang alongside of us and with us as we do so.
This will not be a traditional signing/sketch event, as it will be more fun and loose, like an unleashed puppy.

Throughout the day of the Grand Opening this Saturday, myself, along with a handful of other Zerofriends artists, will be creating random 8"x 10" framed sketches and selling them for various cheap prices.
Plus, since it will be St Patrick's Day, we will be giving away something tiny and special (see below) to the first 50 people who spend $25.00 in the new SF store! And throughout the day there will also be a few more special guests stopping by taking pictures, hanging out, and maybe even telling some terrible jokes or bringing wonderful nachos. But all around, it's just going to be a fun opening to a new destination of rad. Bring snacks!!! We love those!

Here's the info all broken down for the on-the-go type:

ZEROFRIENDS GRAND OPENING
Saturday, March 16th, from 12 Noon to 7 PM
419 Haight St (Lower Haight, in between Fillmore & Webster)
San Francisco
www.zerofriends.com

Featuring live art & crafts to be sold in store periodically throughout the day by Bay Area Zerofriends artists Alex Pardee, Skinner, Dave Correia, Robert Bowen, N8 Van Dyke, Jon Wayshak, Matt136, Chloe Rice and more!

And in conjunction with St Patrick's Day and tiny monsters, the first 50 people to spend $25 in the new store during the Grand Opening will receive this new "Leprechaun" print by me for FREEEEEEE! It's like a paper pot of gold!
See you there!

For more up-to-date info about the store, follow @zerofriendsart on instagram and twitter!

CUSTOMIZED PINBALL MACHINES?? YES PLEASE!

You don't have to be good at something to love doing it. Case in point: me and pinball. Hell, I wasn't even good at the tiny Astro Pinball game that I got from King Norman's.

However, I used to wonder why I was fairly good at home video games when I was younger but a complete failure when it came to pinball skill. But then recently it occurred to me that I was never actually GOOD at video games, but rather I was good at being repetitive and patient until eventually I beat a game that seemed to be fucking impossible at first. And since I never had access to a pinball machine at home, and I chose to spend my quarters sparingly on arcade games that I knew I would last longer than 4 seconds on, I never "got good" at pinball. Unless of course "got good" meant shoot the ball perfectly in the 2 inch space between flippers without having it touch any bumpers on the way down. If that were the case, I'd be the Billy Mitchell of pinball. But nonetheless I was always mesmerized by the pinball machines in the local arcades. Pinball machines almost seemed illegal when I was younger. The flashing lights shouted "CASINO". Each machine was surrounded by at least 3 guys in bandanas. Cigarette ash fell to the floor as a lit cigarette lay on the edge of it while its owner was planted in a weird sex-stance and an angry face. And the incredible artwork on the machines featured pin-up girls, aliens abducting puppies, cops shooting people in the face, haunted houses, and even ROBOCOP.

So I just sat there from a few feet away like a little creep-kid and just stared. At the art, at the players, and at all of the little embellishments that made each machine unique. Some of my favorites that I can remember are the launch button on the Tales From the Crypt machine...
And the severed FREDDY KREUGER head. on the Nightmare machine.
There's a great documentary on Netflix and Hulu called SPECIAL WHEN LIT that will make you fall in love with pinball if you never got a chance to years ago.

Flash forward a billion years and almost all of those amazing arcades are gone, and very few arcade games are getting produced, and even LESS pinball machines.
But there's an amazing team that is attempting to bring a little of that nostalgia back via this new Kickstarter project that I am extremely proud to be a part of.

TILT WARNING CUSTOMS has teamed up with myself as well as other artists (JEREMY FISH, FRANK KOZIK, COOP & SAM FLORES) to completely restore, revamp, and create custom pinball machines from scratch to fill an arcade full of one-of-a-kind-art pinball machines. Here is a little video introducing the amazing project.

Find out more about the project and how to pledge here at the BRING BACK THE ARCADE Kickstarter page.

Free stickers!!!!!

Being friends with Lisa Frank had it's perks back in the 80's. I got let into all of the awesome Trapper-Keeper trading parties. I got front row seats to the glitter parades. I got to paint technicolor spots on blank damatian puppies. I got to ride TWO dolphins into the sunset. And most of all, I had an unlimited amount of cool stickers. Well, after Lisa Frank dyed, i mean DIED, back in a terrible rainbow accident in the late 90's, I've been completely without stickers. It's been pretty traumatizing. That is, until my good friends over at STICKER ROBOT started showering me in what's been missing in my sticker-less life! After I got some die cut stickers from them I actually had enough stickers to take a shower in. It felt great.
We have so many stickers now that, starting today, any order placed online at my webstore ZEROFRIENDS.COM will receive a handful of Zerofriends silkscreen die cut stickers courtesy of Sticker Robot and Lisa Frank's death! Offer only lasts during Lisa Frank's death, or until we run out of stickers. So now's the time to buy some of the marked-down shirts or prints we have because then not only do you get a deal, but you get a STICKY deal on top of a deal! DEALS ON DEALS! Meals on wheels! We love you!

BRETT AMORY'S "ANONYMOUS" SOLO SHOW

One of my favorite fine artists, Brett Amory, is opening his new solo show "ANONYMOUS" this SATURDAY, Feb 2 at our Zerofriends Oakland Gallery. The show, as with a lot of Brett's work, showcases some often overlooked aspects of our society in a brand new, hauntingly beautiful light. In this case, it's discarded passport photos.

From Brett: "The Anonymous series is a cross-section of portraits based on passport photos. The deadpan portraits is culled from of hundreds of found and discarded passport photos. These paintings are a sampling of random American faces. Like booking shots of people who have been arrested, passport photos are not meant to be glamorous. Head shots taken quickly by photographers with no personal interest in the subject. These straight-faced photos are meant only to be used for documentation purposes."

The Scummiest Preview!

This Friday, Jan 18th, in Salt Lake City, UT, coinciding with the first day of the Sundance Film Festival, my best (zero)friends and I are celebrating the lives of our favorite movie villains (as well as a few heroes, a couple of kids and some intergalactic rascals sprinkled in) by presenting a brand new collection of over 100 new paintings and drawings exclusively at our favorite SLC art-hideout, the BLONDE GRIZZLY GALLERY

Here is all of the info as well as some previews from all of us. Hope to see you there!
Zerofriends & Blonde Grizzly Present:
"SCUMDANCE: Celebrating the Villainous Scum of the Silver Screen"
Featuring new artwork by ALEX PARDEE, DAVE CORREIA, JON WAYSHAK, MATT136, VIC BACK, ROBERT BOWEN, SKINNER, AUSTEN STANTON & CHLOE RICE

Friday, Jan 18th
6-10PM
At Blonde Grizzly
213 East 300 South
Salt Lake City, UT
(801)355-9075
Sneak previews:

Jon Wayshak nearly destroyed anyone who's ever attempted to paint an Alien with this piece....
...or a Predator with this one.

..and especially Master Blaster.

Skinner likes his scum strictly in stop-motion.

Skinner be Kakken, yo!

Like Skinner, this chick's a stoner....

I've been working on my "Doppelgangers" series of quick watercolor mini-portraits of my favorite monsters for 3 years now, but I've never painted as many at once as I have for this show. On display at "Scumdance" will be 100 original paintings from my Doppelgangers series, with over 75 of them BRAND NEW that I created over the last 3 weeks. That now makes the series near complete with over 150 monsters total, which I am excited to announce that the entire series will be contained in a brand new art book from Gingko Press x Zerofriends called "DOPPELGANGERS" that will be released later this year. Here's a few of the new paintings.
One of the best tattoo artists around, Vic Back, is adding some more amazing Xenomorph scum to the gallery, too, as well as adding a certain butcher, AND a famous haircut.

Matt136, fresh off of his extraordinary Retrospective show at the Olive Hyde Guild created an entire series of hand-carved, hand painted and completely awesomely ridiculous PING PONG paddles based on all the scummy weirdos in the cantina on Mos Eisley.
Ponda fucking Baba.

And someone else is adding an extra dimension to the gallery walls too...

Toy Maker, photographer and insect-princess of imagination-land, Chloe Rice asked herself the age-old question of "What does monster-blood look like up close?" And then she answered her own question with "I bet Hannibal Lecter's blood also needs restraining from eating people, and I bet Freddy Krueger's blood is dirty, red and green!" Then she proceeded to make soft, cute versions of these villains' blood drops with her own, non-scummy hands

Yep...Leatherface's blood wears the skin of other blood.

Robert Bowen, who just showed some incredible new paintings at our Zerofriends Gallery last month, painted a ton of silly little 5" x 7" scummy pieces featuring more than one of my favorite "MASKS"

And Zerofriends' resident (and insanely skilled) work-horse Dave Correia painted an entire wall-worth of classic and gorgeously ugly oil portraits of his dream-guys, including one of those assholes from THEY LIVE (above).

And a couple of girls to throw off the balance (yah, I bet you didn't know Jason is really a girl.)

Dave will also be displaying a new series of pencil sketches that I love more than Wes Anderson loves pale yellow.
There's a LOT more to see in person so come down to the gallery if you are around SLC, and if not, the show (as well as any original paintings for sale) will go online at Blonde Grizzly the following day. See you there, scummos!
