New Art Show In SLC This Friday!

Coinciding with the festival of the dancing sun or whatever is going on in them there mountains in Utah, Dave Correia and myself will be taking over our favorite gallery in Salt Lake City, BLONDE GRIZZLY this Friday night from 6-9PM showcasing new and old paintings and drawings as well as a fun "participation" wall for you to offer suggestions on how to make Hollywood better, seeing as how most of Hollywood will be up here drinking and open to new ideas that they won't remember.

The show is free, Dave and I will be there to sign things or just to hang out and high five your forehead, and we will also have a ton of new Zerofriends products on hand too. So after you watch that one movie, you know, about the troubled marriage, the wine drinking and the librarian with one leg trying to be an olympic athlete, come on down to the gallery and make fun of some silly paintings! Dave Correia will be showcasing a huge collection of over 30 original drawings taken from his last two published art books, and I will be debuting a brand new series of 15 new paintings called "ICANS". Why am I calling them "Icans"? Glad you didn't really ask, but I'm telling you anyway. Well, because whether SOPA passes or not, I will continue to take any licensed character, or pop culture icon and do whatever I want with it for art's sake, because ICAN. Also, I just want to conduct an ongoing experiment to see if ICAN take any cool icon from pop culture and make it way shittier by "re-imagining" it. So far, much like Hollywood does most of the time, the experiment is a super fun success!

"ADVULTURE TIME!!!!"

While in NY, photographer Chloe Rice and I noticed a strange species of upright Vultures lurking around, feeding off of discarded socks with meat in them, digging through garbage, and fighting humans with swords. We decided to follow one, and it turned out that said vulture was on a quest for a decapitated human head filled with rubies. What followed was a voyeuristic journey through rain, wind, soot and bum-feces as we embraced the new experience of discovering a legendary species of animal: The Advulture: A human/vulture hybrid that lives for adventure.

Inspired, Chloe went back out hunting and photographed some other advultures as I stayed in and painted what I imagined they would dream about.

Tomorrow, Friday Jan 6 at the ZEROFRIENDS Retail Store/Gallery in Oakland, I will be displaying a small series of new Advulture paintings alongside a series of Advulture photos that Chloe will be displaying.

And as usual, the Zerofriends retail store will be open and we have a ton of new stuff for sale. I will be at the opening so come say hi. See you there!

Thank you everyone for making 2011 Zerofriends' most expansive year yet. We are finally leveling up by leveling down from "Unstable Gypsies Around the Country" to "More-Stable Gypsies In Oakland". I came out to NY this week with only two objectives:
1. Pretend to be a vulture and start a satanic fire in a public place, and
2. Team up with amazing photographer and craft-gypsy CHLOE RICE to create a 20-page zine within 24 hours while sitting outside in the freezing cold drawing inspiration from the weather, the people, and the pigeons.

And the leftover copies that don't find a free home for, we are going to burn in order to stay warm from the freezine.

Dr. SeWUss & Zerofriends 2.0

No one EVER writes the books that I WANT TO READ! So sometimes I just have to make covers for them and hope that someday they become real.

And just as a heads up, I'll never be putting this up as a print or on a shirt or anything because all I basically did was steal the wonderful Dr. Seuss' art and style, but if you want it for any reason here is a link to download a high-rez version of it:

Now, since I continue to be on my Wu-Tang kick, which has gone on for about 16 years now consistently, I figured that there is no better time to announce the launch of a brand new section/type of shirts on the ZEROFRIENDS STORE that will be expanding TEEmendously over the course of the next few months.

The new line of shirts is called ZEROFRIENDS 2.0 and we are kicking it off with my "Doctor Wu" shirt!

So what exactly is this new line and why "2.0", aside from just being unoriginally silly, you ask?

Well, in short, because a small part of our hearts has gone DIGITAL! But in (non-virtual) realiTEE, this is our "Direct To Garment" line of t-shirts that are produced digitally, rather than screenprinted.
This printing process allows us to quickly produce fun, topical shirts as well as experiment with colors and designs that we would never be able to with screenprinting.

The other main reason we are putting this new line of shirts up is simply to have FUN. The shirts that will be available in the Zerofriends 2.0 line are not going to be specifically limited, but each shirt will only be available for a limited time, and will disappear without notice, so we can constantly change out designs as sporadically as I change my opinion. This line will basically be catered toward ideas that I scribble out at 2AM that only 3 or 4 people in the world might like. Well, guess what? If you're one of those 3 or 4 people, Zerofriends 2.0 is for you.

The Makings of a Horrific Holiday Video.

I am temporarily changing the name of my company today to Zerosarcasm, because all I am filled with today is sentiment. Or in this case, Santament. (Ok so maybe there's a little sarcasm still...)
2 Years ago this week, Zerofriends' director Stephen Reedy, myself and the whole crew released our very first Zerofriends short film to celebrate the upcoming holidays. Since it's that time of year again, if you missed it when we released it, here it is for all of your Horrorday, i mean Holiday, enjoyment..

Everything Is SUPER Terrible

I have some terrible news to announce. But guess what? I've never felt this awesome telling you something this terrible. No, Joaquin Phoenix and I didn't finally finish our dubstep album. BE PATIENT!!!

Instead, I am terribly proud to tell you that I teamed up with my all-time favorite VHS misfit wizards at EVERYTHING IS TERRIBLE to create a little drawing of the only human on the fucking planet that actually DESERVES to use the term "swag", considering his literal invention of it spontaneously on the Barbie-Dance Club back in 1988. That's right. After 4 years of begging the heavens to let me have SOMETHING to do with EIT & their 13 year old inhuman mascot, all of the Jerry Maguire's shined their lasers on my prayers and I got to draw DUANNNNNNEEEE! If you haven't been star-punched in the face by Duane's fashion sense, his eye for trends, and his mutantly perfect wiggling, watch...this....now.

And now that you have leveled up, and perhaps even want to be another sponsor to add to Duane's shirt-patch collection, here is my rendition of my favorite 7th grader ever, which to me seemed a little TOO UNCANNILY like Aladdin Sane so here is ALADDIN DUANE!

Now...on to the main course!

Well, it's been over 2 years in the making, which is, in my terms, about 8 thousand gallons of roasted red pepper hummus and only 4 full changes of clothes. Over the last 2 and half years, writer/director mastermind Stephen Reedy, myself, Dave Correia, cinematographer Chris Saul, sound and comedy madmen Rich Arenas & Josh Petersdorf, makeup guru Melissa Pizzamiglio, producer Megan Powers, Nic Aragon and our whole Zerofriends gang jumped head first into an attempt to build something from nothing. Our goal was to step outside of the 2-dimensional art world and construct a new unique universe and style within the film, advertising, and online video world that would be an extension and homage to both my artwork as well as the whole Zerofriends brand. For our first video (T-Shirt Monster) we had almost zero resources other than our collective creativity, passion and willingness to sacrifice our minds and bodies....a lot. All in the name of fun.....and tentacles

Well, we loved getting our faces scraped off, our eyes burned from glo-sticks,and our houses ruined from plaster and dirt so much that we are going to keep going. But meanwhile, we are finally offering these last 2 years of our lives in the form of a fun little digital pizza for you to cook up in your DVD player and soak in our moving scrapbook.

What is this Digital Video Digital exactly?

Well, first and foremost, it's over 20 high-quality versions of our favorite short films, commercials and music videos that we have produced that have been seen on our YOUTUBE CHANNEL.

Over the last couple of months, due to a smorgasbord of adventures and emotions, the synapses in my brain have shape-shifted, changed the way they transmit neurons and have been causing my brain to experience a whole new view on the world around me, both challenging and inspiring me even more than watching seven new seasons in a row of Tales From The Crypt from inside a space shuttle that turns out to be a real transformer. I've just been kind of looking at everything in my life from a slightly different perspective and soaking it in as if it's the first time. I can't stop smiling. And guess what? It's awesome. It's like re-watching The Matrix AFTER being convincingly told that you're IN the Matrix. More on that later, after I figure out what to do with my new love for kites, mimes, Totoro and kidnapping.

Keeping my new brain-morphing in mind, I've always pretty much accepted and appreciated all kinds of art. Hell I even think The Human Centipede director TOM SIX'S "Shocking" Paintings have some genuine artistic value. So generally, I have always appreciated Andy Warhol's approach to his work, his social and economical commentaries, the implementation of his "factory" and the insanely huge impact it's all had on pop culture and modern art. However, I never really gave two shits about the actual aesthetics of the art itself. But what i DO give multiple shits about now is having fun, splattering paint, making puns that most likely only Chloe or Keith would appreciate, and now selfishly realizing that, with photoshop, still-working eyes and a little imagination, I can see every part of the world in a brand NEW way, even if it involves butchering the world the way mother nature and some art-hippies intended it to exist.

So on that note, I know Andy Warhol made some inkblot paintings, which I learned about last year from a very well-versed teacher named JAY-Z who wrote books or something. But from what I could find, everyone, including Andy himself, failed to see the pun that was sitting in plain site. So I took it upon myself to continue to butcher things that people like in order to make myself smile. And it worked. I totally like Andy Warhol's art now! And I like his name better too!

"The Family Circus" requires a lot of imagination to fully enjoy it.

That statement is absolutely false, by the way.

Last night my friend Chloe and I had a passionate conversation about 89-year-old cartoonist Bil Keane's mesmerizing bagel-sized bore-fest of a funny comic, "The Family Circus".

Both of us, as well as millions of similar confused humans, have always been strangely attracted to the one-panel comic's fascinating banality, much in the same way we might be attracted to someone scrubbing their forearms with steel wool in public.

After swimming together though a sea of emotions that ranged from anger and bemusement, to nostalgia and frustrating warmth, we effortlessly moved on in our conversation, probably to issues that are equally as important, like dressing up animals in other animal costumes, mean blind people, purposely erasing parts of our memory to play jokes on ourselves, and eating waffles with cheese.

Little did we know that unfortunately, this morning, mere hours after our discussion, Bil Keane passed away.

Before investigating, the thought DID occur to me that perhaps we talked about him so hard that his ears rang loudly enough to explode his head.

But luckily we didn't murder him with cell-phone signals, speech, and telepathic mind bullets.

Nonetheless, I feel obligated to mention his passing and the death of something that, like it or not, has been a part of our eyeballs and hearts for….ever.

What are we gonna stare at angrily in the corner of the newspaper now? Well, my best guess: "IDA KNOW".

So in an homage to Mr. Keane and his universe of vapid family repetition, here is an old "Family Circus" parody I drew a few years back as part of my "BUNNYWITH.." Comic Series. Without Bil Keane, I would have never had the urge to draw a severed head on a rabbit dick. So thanks, BIL!!

Now, additionally in our conversation, we also brought up "Garfield Minus Garfield", a parody strip by Dan Walsh where Garfield is removed from each panel, making all of the other characters seem utterly insane. We discussed how funny it would be if we completely ripped off that idea, but instead of just removing one character, we would remove the entire comic and punchline, since neither of them EVER really were the major attraction to the comic strip. Knowing what every character, setting, and situation that have been explored throughout the 786 years that The Family Circus has been around is enough ammo to jostle our imaginations as to what the cartoon would look like if we made up our own mundane punchlines to go along with a blank panel. Sound convoluted and stupid? Well….you see the parallels, right?

Whatever, we thought it was funny at 2:30 in the morning last night, so hearing the news today made me try it out, and guess what? HILARIOUS.

Pretty soon I'm just going to destroy my entire house and erase my memory and laugh maniacally in my own imagination, because that's pretty much where I think I'm heading.

"Night Of The Treeple" Re-Release!

RE-TWEET? Nah, more like RE-"TREE"T!!

That is correct, after over 3 years, Zerofriends is finally re-launching one of my favorite properties that I've created over the years, called "NIGHT OF THE TREEPLE".

As of now, we have just released all of the below images as LIMITED EDITION giclee prints, which have never been available as giclee prints before now, and we will follow up shortly in the future with a full line of t-shirts based on these designs.

Butt first….I mean but first…

In case you live in the sewers with the CHUDs and Joe Paterno's secrets, and you missed this video floating around on the information superhighway a few years back, take a second to witness this recently (as in, 2008) uncovered trailer to a lost gem of a movie from the late 70's, somehow starring "Future Me" since in the late 70's i was 2 years old. But don't pay attention to that. Just pay attention to all of the Awesome contained here:

Now that you know all about Ross going to the gym and Ted and his unfortunate transformation into a killer tree, here is a little more about the inception of the project and exactly what i was TREEing to accomplish with it. Tree what i did there?

The idea behind the whole project was basically that I wanted to create a line of prints and clothing that was both an homage to a genre of film that I love (70's and 80's horror / exploitation films), as well as a catalyst to introduce a new way of presenting art and apparel as a way of telling a story visually. In a way, the "Treeple" line is my own personal and original version of a 1970's exploitation horror film, as told through my art and apparel. I wanted to create "A Cinematic Apparel Line".

  In an era where gorgeous models fought aliens in space (Barbarella), where a group of farmers buried people in the dirt and harvested their heads (Motel Hell), where the government was ALWAYS at fault for negligence, where alien plants took took over and replicated humans (Invasion of the Body Snatchers), deformed siamese twins became evil serial killers (Basket Case), and toxic waste was EVERYWHERE (Toxic Avenger, Empire of the ants, Food of the Gods, Robocop, etc), it was apparent that the reality of the story never mattered, it was simply fun and new to explore the "What if's?" of storytelling and filmmaking. So I asked "What if toxic waste made trees attack humans and turn them into some kind of tree/zombie/slasher hybrid?! Like mother nature's revenge for neglect."

So yah, that's the deal. I'm not saying there WON'T be a whole "Night of the Treeple" movie since we had a fucking blast making the trailer, but for now, be on the lookout for the new "Night of the Treeple" prints that are AVAILABLE NOW and apparel available very soon, both through my apparel company, ZEROFRIENDS.

And We will be selling a brand new crop of "OOPS!" Prints and shirts on SATURDAY ONLY! If you aren't familiar with our "OOPS!" prints, we value the quality of our giclee prints higher than Seth Rogan in Amsterdam, so any small flaws (color variation, small bends, etc) get thrown into the Island of Misfit Print Pile which every few months or so we unleash into the world for less than half the price of the regular limited prints. These prints are all labeled "OOPS!" and do NOT affect the numbered run/value of the standard edition prints, but they still perform the same way when surrounded by a nice comforting frame.

The same applies to a small amount of Oops shirts and clearance items that we have in stock as well.

"The Butcher Kings" Full Recap Madness

THE BUTCHER KINGS HAVE LEFT THE BUILDING.

For 35 days straight, Skinner and I shacked up together, cut off the outside world, gave two shits about what anyone wanted us to paint for a new collection of pieces, and laughed our way maniacally through mutual therapy as we may or may not had been committing career suicide. And it was the best 35 days of my life.

If you hadn't been following us and have no idea what "The Butcher Kings" show is, you can read a pretty good summary of the madness leading up to the event over on my TUMBLR page HERE.

So Now that the first step is over, and the show has opened at Gallery 1988 in LA, we want to thank everyone for blindly supporting our annoying weirdness throughout the process. For numerous reasons, Skinner and I had always intended to try a new approach in marketing our "Butcher Kings" show, but we didn't really know what that meant at first. As the paintings started to come together, so did our cabin fever, an endless supply of in-jokes, and a sickening amount of laughter and burritos. We realized early on that there wasn't going to be one, two, or even 10 pieces of art that would represent the whole collection of work visually, so instead we just decided to focus on the madness that was developing inside of us both with photos and videos (you can watch all 5 of the "Butcher King Tapes" HERE ) as our sleep schedule got worse and our stress levels heightened as we tried to reach our goal of 80 paintings in 5 weeks. We knew it was an odd way to promote an art show without ever showing any art at all, but thanks to a lot of our friends, fans, and some really supportive websites, we were able to spread our Mort-ness to quite a few avenues and we had a really really good opening. We got great coverage on Laughing Squid, the Nerdist, Slash Film, Complex magazine, Geek Tyrant, Daily Dujour, Spanky Stokes and more! So yah, thanks again for everyone's support. Here is a gigantic random collection of photos, videos and art from both the opening and some of the days leading up to it.

Today is the day of the Mort. Skinner and my art show "The Butcher Kings" opens TONIGHT at Gallery 1988 Melrose in Los Angeles (on the corner of Melrose at LaBrea). We are continuing to keep all of the actual contents of the show in wraps but Skinner and I kidnapped a few people we admire, showed them all of the art, tortured them, shoved a tape recorder in front of their dumb mouths and forced them to tell the truth about what they saw…..

Skinner and I have been living together for the last month where we completely destroyed all of our memories of the pop-culture icons we have grown to love, then channelled the soul of a cynical, witty, self-destructive and borderline insane man-child and reconstructed our memories to create an odd new world of mort.

And some words from Skinner and I regarding the scope of the show:

When Skinner and I met in the late 90's, the Internet hadn't yet been integrated as a common marketing tool for artists and musicians, and the actual outlets that WERE available for us to spread our imagination and artwork out to were limited to friends, family, schools, the local comic shops and the occasional small cafe-galleries and musical acts that catered toward non-traditional artwork. The bi-product of being undeniably driven by the passion to create without having outlets for either critiques OR validations, however, was that we both created our artwork strictly for ourselves and to make US happy.

Over the course of the last decade, as the Internet has become a more common and extremely useful tool in all aspects of art appreciation, execution, networking, and entrepreneurism, Skinner and I have attempted to adapt our thinking and artistic approaches in conjunction with this accelerated technology, but on numerous occasions we have also caught ourselves falling victim to this new widespread accessibility to our artwork.

The Internet provides such a rapid firing of both criticism and praise that, over the course of the last few years, has made both Skinner and I almost TOO aware of what people will like and dislike when our work is displayed publicly, causing us to recently question just who we are now creating art for. Are our imaginations subconsciously aware more so now of what others will think about our art? Are we now being secretly driven to create something that more people can "relate" to in hopes that we will in turn get more Twitter followers and more Facebook "likes" and somehow transcribe that invisible validation to more monetary success? In short, Skinner and I both realized that, for whatever reasons, we were taking ourselves too seriously.

Well, fuck that.

We missed creating art with the sole purpose of making ourselves smile and laugh. We missed not caring if we "lose a follower" by confusing someone with a drawing of VIKKI from Small Wonder or offending someone with a drawing of a demonic dick if that dick was fun to draw. And trust us, dicks are fun to draw. And they're hilarious.

So in an attempt to re-unite our fearlessness, and to simply have fun using our separate memories and inspirations as our tools, Skinner and I present to you, "THE BUTCHER KINGS".

Using the existing pop culture icons that we adore, and mutually drawing inspiration from various sources including Gary Larsen's 'The Far Side', Jack Kirby, Wheel of Fortune, Carrot Top, Filmation Cartoons, Robot Chicken & Aqua Teen Hunger Force, we imagined what would happen if all of a sudden the memories of every pop culture property had begun to be torn apart by an unknown force and, in order to save the memories from total eradication, had to be gathered, reassembled and possibly even pushed off of a cliff by someone who was goofy, cynical, socially inept and slightly insane. That person….is us.

If you didn't know, Skinner and myself have donned the burdens of nine thousand Morts and joined forces to unleash a new collection of over 80 new affordable paintings and drawings at Gallery 1988 Melrose in LA this thursday, Oct 6 at 7PM. The show is being shrouded in silly secrecy because A) we really feel that the collection of paintings works best if you let yourself engage in the whole retarded shebang, and B) because we kinda feel like it.

Meanwhile, artist and disgustingly Korean adventurer Dave Choe spent some time with us checking out our dicks, i mean our paintings, and just sent over the very first review of the show. I can't tell if it's good or bad, because honestly, I'm still digging feces out of my throat and brain from when we all played "Centipede" by the campfire. So yah, here is Dave's review, and make sure that if you are in LA and like laughing either with us or AT us, come check out our "Butcher Kings" show.

"The first time Alex Pardee, Skinner and I acted out our version of the Human Centipede, Redvine inspiration hit. Alex tried to say something about Gary Coleman or Ed-209 but I couldn't make out what he was saying because my entire Korean kimchee-laced asshole was in his mouth and both of my ears were muffled inside Skinner's unnaturally large foreskin, which is the skin from the eyelid of a Siamese cyclops from an extinct ruling class of Mermen with impenetrable cat-tongue skin which was sewn onto the head of his dick, so as you can imagine I couldn't hear so good.

These two idiot Shamans got together behind my back to make a secret language of paintings based on the secret teachings of serial killers all to make me jealous. And it worked! Here are two socially inept, borderline retarded manimal boys' take on all the shit you and your horrible fake friends talk and think about but would never dare to actually create because of the social criticism, political outrage and outcasting you'd feel from friends and lovers, but that's the best part of being retarded (besides jacking off whenever and wherever you want). No art like this exists on the planet because no one is as stupid/ignorant/genius enough to spend this amount of time to render and craft what its like to get down with your syndrome, and carpet bomb your fleeting fantasies like a cum glazed bear claw dripping with rotten ignorant sperms. New Garbage Pail Kids Paintings!

If you are anywhere near LA, and are even remotely interested in some good disgusting 80's nostalgia, you HAVE TO go check out the official Garbage Pail Kids art show tonight at GALLERY 1988. The good dudes at 1988 & THE HUNDREDS have put together a phenomenal show and given how much impact Garbage Pail Kids, and specifically artist JOHN POUND who painted a majority of the cards, had on me in my childhood, I couldn't be more excited to be included in this event. We were asked to pick specific cards from any of the original TOPPS-series cards and use them as inspiration to re-imagine the card however we wanted to. Here are the 3 that I did for the show, all of which are original watercolor paintings measuring 11 x 14 and up for sale at the show TONIGHT, SEPT 2, AT GALLERY 1988 MELROSE in LA. Wish I could be in attendance at the show but I'm locked up in a hole drawing more shit, dicks and robots with SKINNER for our 2-man show (also at G1988) next month! Word. "Attack The Block" Love letter....

Occasionally I will stumble upon something that will be so inspiring that I feel I have to shove everything to the side and just start scribbling. Well, this weekend is one of those times. I saw Joe Cornish’s alien-invasion movie “Attack The Block” the other day and I was so refreshingly blown away by it I couldn’t stop thinking about it, so I drew this for funsies:

If you are anywhere within atomic-bomb-fallout distance from one of the few theaters that is showing “Attack The Block” I highly suggest you do your eyes and heart a favor and go see it. Edgar Wright (Director of Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim and who is showing ALL 3 OF THOSE MOVIES AT THE CASTRO IN SF IN A FEW WEEKS!!!) is one of the executive producers so it pretty much goes without saying that this is another well-deserved notch on his champion “i make awesome things” belt.

And for REALS lastly, we have been sitting on this for a few weeks and I am excited to finally share this with you. The coolest Geek Girls in the game, TEAM UNICORN who you may know from their GEEK & GAMER GIRLS Video, asked me to design something for them that would embody their spirits when they unleash themselves to the Comic Con crowd this year, so here it is. This 17" x 22" Limited Edition Giclee will be available for purchase through TEAM UNICORN, who will be hanging at NERD HQ, which will be on the upper level of the convention. Uh oh...looks like my good friend (and balls-out awesome director) Adam Green dropped a fun little dime about a small new project we have been working on.....

All I can tell you is that so far we are having a blast making this because, well, we both love monsters (of all sorts), and we both love art. Adam & I are like a match made in Hell(raiser).

Sucker Punch on Blu-RAY!

Zack Snyder's "Sucker Punch" Extended Cut comes out today on Blu-Ray, which is basically as cool as watching a TINY IMAX movie in your house. And the extended cut has a few scenes that would have made the movie an "R" in theaters and actually make the story even darker and cooler. Check it out if you can! If you didn't know, this film played a huge part in my life over the last 2 years as I got to create a ton of art for it. Today rules.

One year ago, a little animated web series I created for Warner Bros Television got released after 3 years of dreaming about it and producing it. This was, and still is, one of the best learning experiences of my career. Happy 1-Year Birthday, Animated CHADAM!

My Love-Letter to The Developers of inFAMOUS 2

Dear Sony, Sucker Punch Productions, and the entire inFAMOUS 2 creative team,

My name is Alex Pardee. My father and I both had Atari joysticks practically fused to our hands since I was 4 years old. Luckily, I was able to surgically remove said joystick after a few years and repeatedly replace it with a NES controller, then a Genesis one, and so forth. There may have even been a Dreamcast controller with a microphone used to control a retarded fish at one point, too.
When I was 6 years old I created a concept for a horror/action video game based on the schoolyard game of "Tetherball", which revolved around demonic creatures infesting an elementary school that could only be defeated by a boy who stands next to his tetherball pole and hits the monsters with his chained up ball. I have no idea how that wold have been considered innovative, even in 1982, but nonetheless I submitted it to Activision (because they had the best box art) and patiently awaited the development and release of my Tetherball game. I think I went to Sears every weekend to ask about it. Activision must have gone out of business or something because my game never came out. But, whatever. I was never too depressed about it. I just kept playing video games. Even the stupid ones like "GUMSHOE" where you shot a detective in the face and that somehow made him bounce through the air to solve mysteries and eat balloons.

The more I played video games, the more I wanted to develop them. But as fate would have it, I grew introverted in middle school and eventually fell into the secret life of a starving artist, which I continue to pursue (and passionately love) to this very day.

Flash forward to what seems like a hundred years later. I am currently very ill. Though I am finally healing as of today, for the past 23 days I have been nearly bedridden due to some complications and infections contracted after multiple oral surgeries. As someone who lives alone, has never broken a bone, rarely gets sick, and passionately works 16 hours a day, I was devastated at the simple fact that I could do little more than sink into my couch and let the pain guide my groans. My girlfriend has been with me off and on via Skype so that has worked worked wonders, and my friends have come by a couple times a day to shove milkshakes in my face and make sure I didn't explode from the pain. But mostly, I have been alone. And regardless of the amount of painkillers I devour, the pressure, the pain, and the acidic mustard taste of infection has been so prominent that I can do little more than dwell on it every second. I couldn't draw. I couldn't work on my computer. I couldn't even answer emails without growing nauseated.

Now, sickness aside, I still passionately love video games, but due to my general work schedule, I rarely get a chance to fully indulge myself in the experience of starting and completing a game. I tend to use video games as small hour-long personal reward sessions, knowing damn well that I'm paying 60 dollars for (usually) only one hour of escape. But for that one hour, after weeks of hard work, the "dollar-per-minute" price-tag is worth it. However, if a game is good enough in that one hour to take my mind off of work and stress, I may stick with it a little longer. But that's rare.

So during the first few days on my couch as I sat, silently and cluelessly hoping my body was fighting something I could feel but couldn't see, and once I was able to actually focus on my television without feeling like I was piggyback-riding an alaskan fisherman in a thunderstorm, I decided to reward myself with 60 minutes of a video game. That video game was inFAMOUS 2.

5 minutes passed. I felt dizzy. Sick to my stomach. "Hmm. A fast-paced, loud, spinning video game probably isn't going to help," I thought to myself. Then 30 minutes passed. The disgusting taste in my mouth seemed to have gone away for a few minutes. 60 minutes passed. 90 minutes passed. 3 hours passed. More antibiotics. More painkillers. 6 hours passed. 8 hours passed.
Those initial 8 hours of unknowingly focusing 100% on inFAMOUS 2 were the beginning of my new escape. During a time in my life where all I could do was simply WAIT for my body to heal, I had discovered something that allowed my brain to escape and forget about the pain.

Am I being a bit overdramatic? Perhaps, but not much. inFAMOUS 2, as a video game, is a rare gem amongst a field of nicely painted clunky rocks (like the disappointing wreck of a game that Shadows Of The Damned is), and because of that, I thank every person who wrote so much as one line of code in the game for saving me from going insane, as those 8 hours turned into a total of close to 45 pain-forgetting hours of escapism. When I first sat down to write this I did a bunch of research about the game and was going to attempt to sound like a real and informative reviewer, but the reality of it is that none of the technicalities matter. After 5 minutes, my television came to life and I was able to seamlessly transition into the role of Cole McGrath and feel like a hero. Or, rather, in my case, I got to feel like an asshole that loved jumping 19 stories down and power-bombing street performers into mush for no reason. Pushing my pain to the side, inFAMOUS 2 took me on an adventure that spanned a devastated, flooded New Marais, 30-story skyscrapers, Louisiana swamps, huge battleships, suspension bridges, cemeteries, ghettos, and even Ice-Castles; an evolution of super-powers, games-within-the game that included CSI-like investigations, flight simulators, on-rail shooters, watching television, x-raying humans, controlling an army of monsters, killing protesters, throwing cars, playing skee-ball, flirting with a Voodoo queen and even riding on the shoulders of 100-foot tall electrified black man.

The environment is lush, beautiful, varied, and ballsy. The animation both in-game as well as the cinematics is subtle, but perfect. The voice-acting is convincing. The combat system is fun. And thanks to the concept designs of Massive Black and The Aaron Sims company, the creatures and characters are some of the biggest and best outside of Gears Of War, God Of War & Bioshock.

So as sappy as this is, and even though I'm practically a hundred years old, Infamous 2 not only helped me forget about my pain, but also made me want to make a video game again . Even if it's a
stupid one. Does anyone even still PLAY tetherball?

A majority of my wits and snarky attempts at crude humor have been stripped away by my dentist who may or may not actually be a personified demon, so I will keep this short.
First it was Las Vegas. And though I am still mentally recovering from getting levitated by David Copperfield and gaining a new DJ friend to add to my list of Zerofriends, I'm hopping in my Sweet Pickles Bus and my extremely intimate "Awful/Resilient" Book-signing tour is taking both DENVER & SALT LAKE CITY by tiny storm THIS WEEKEND!

Zerofriends Pop-up in PORTLAND Opens Tomorrow!

Continuing our Gypsy-like tradition, but substituting snake oil, hair tonic and curses for art prints, shirts, and hugs, the Zerofriends crew is setting up shop in one of my favorite places on earth (aside from THIS ALIEN'S closet ), PORTLAND, OREGON!

Yes, starting TODAY, June 2nd, and running through July 28th, an entire ZEROFRIENDS retail pop-up shop will be taking up residency INSIDE the Upper Playground PDX store downtown on 5th & couch (in between 2 of my other favorite places, Ground Kontrol & Floating World comics, and down the street from ANOTHER favorite spot, Kamp Grizzly…Portland has a lot of favorite spots. Oh, Voodoo Donuts, that's the best. Man, I should move there.)
Anyway, meandering thoughts aside, if you are in the Portland area in the next 2 months, please stop in and check out our gypsy-wares and help support our continued travels to other cities!

I'M HOPPING IN THE FAMILY TRUCKSTER AND GOING ON MY VERY FIRST SOLO ART & BOOK RELEASE TOUR! Well, kinda:)

By "TOUR" I really mean, about once a week for the next few weeks I'm gonna go hang in different cities and try to sell a few copies of my new book and do fun stuff, like eat and high five bums. For the first stop, to coincide with the release of a movie that has NOTHING in common with my lifestyle (except maybe a beard, a monkey and some general bad decision making), I'm putting on a wolf shirt, ruphie-ing myself, and waking up tomorrow in VEGAS where I'm teaming up with supertoystore KIDROBOT as they take over the Cosmopolitan Hotel on the strip and I am going to be LIVE-PAINTING a huge mural in their new store/gallery all weekend along with signing anything you wanna bring by. If you wanted to even bring by a couple issues of TIME magazine I'd even sign those because it would be funny to be a "sign of the times". Or you can bring those fancy lollipops from across the street so Leah and I can "Sucker-Punch" each other's faces and then high five you if you're a bum. Anyway, come by if you are in or around the Vegas area and watch my back sweat while i nervously try to symmetrically paint a giant friendly monster thing! So, I have a new art book called "Awful / Resilient" from Gingko Press & Upper Playground coming out in a month or so. And I am releasing both regular editions in June, and then sometime later on in the year (I am not sure when I am receiving them) I will be releasing a limited edition, hand-painted-cover version of the book. The regular edition will be about $30 and the limited one will be about $100.
Well, I got an advance copy of the limited one in the mail yesterday, so I decided that I want to give it away at the show. I haven't quite figured out if I want to do a raffle, or some kind of drawing, but I will figure it out. Either way, this picture shows the un-embellished cover on the left and the version that I am giving away on the right, which I painted on with my face and neck.

Happy Easter Part 2

It was Easter Eve, a saturday, if i remember correctly. My sisters and I were decorating the Easter Tree with our Mother. We were singing Easter Carols...happy, excited, waiting for Dad to get home from work.
A few hours passed, and we started to worry. Dad wasnt home yet. Mom called the office. The said he had left.
After about a week ,the police gave up.
It was snowing outside, even though it was clearly April. The house was cold. I threw some logs on the fire....thats when i noticed the smell.
The firemen came, they broke through the chimney top. We were all waiting, expecting them to pull out some dead cat, or a bird...
Instead, they pulled out my father.
He was dressed in an Easter Bunny costume. He had been climbing down the chimney on Easter Eve, his arms loaded with eggs and candy. He was going to surprise us.
Thats how i found out there was no Easter Bunny.

This is the only picture i have of my father, its from the day they pulled him out. He looks so happy....

Just in time for SCREAM 4, which comes out this Friday, I am proud to announce the unveiling of my upcoming poster releases as part of the acclaimed MONDO POSTERS' ongoing DIRECTOR SERIES. "HEROES" Fukushima Charity Print Now Available.

I can only wish I was so brave.

I have been following the reports of the massive destruction and progress in maintaining and rebuilding the areas of Japan that were affected, at first, by the Tsunami and then secondly, by the radiation leakage from the Fukushima Power Plant. Had the emloyees of Fukushima ran away screaming and hiding, the plant would have completely broken down, risking a devastating amount of radiation into the surrounding areas, and possibly further. But they didn't. They stayed and fought. And they continue to fight.

I was reading a lot about the group of heroic plant workers, now dubbed the "Fukushima 50" who are selflessly risking their lives to prevent the plant's destruction when I ran across
THIS ARTICLE that really hit me. When asked why he risked his life to continue working and helping at Fukushima, Hiroyuki Kohno basically said "If I go, I will not return with the same healthy body. But I have no wife and no children, so I feel like it is my duty to fight." Almost immediately after reading that I had the urge to draw this image inspired by their bravery.

I have no idea how someone can be so brave, but I thank Kohno, and all of the other Fukushima workers for being, in the simplest term, HEROES.

GOOD Examples: Theodore RoseFelt from Letters from Digested Children as a plush toy with a stomach that opens; Bunnywith collectible figurines; The Aroma from Vertigo Plush, etc.

BAD Examples: "That one monster with the teeth and the goofy eyes with the tree head'; A swarovski crystalized Goodnight Lava-lamp; or "Draw me a tattoo." Sorry, but I am not much of a tattoo artist, and they aren't fun to play with!

As with everyone else, we stayed up throughout the night of March 10/11 and could do nothing but sit in front of the television and our computers and watch the destruction caused by the deadly chain reaction of an 8.9 magnitude earthquake leading to a devastating tsunami off of the eastern coast of Japan. Within hours, we witnessed the damage increase tenfold. It is tragic times such as these that don't call for humor, don't call for fear, and although emotions are high, don't call for anger. Times like these simply call for help and support.

We at Zerofriends are re-releasing one of our most popular images, altered to resemble the iconic and powerful sun of the Japanese flag on a new Limited Giclee print titled "AMITY SMURF" designed, signed and numbered by me. And though it may not be much, we are donating 100% of the proceeds directly to the Japanese Red Cross.

Well, it's taken us a quick minute to prepare these for release, as the aftermath of my "VERTIGO" show at Corey Helford Gallery last month was a lot stronger and less anticipated than….well…I anticipated! So we are still just little bottles of mustard playing ketchup. Good news is that we may have a new Zerofriends retail spot possibly opening soon in the BayArea! But more on that later. Well, if you have ever seen any of Zack's other movies (300, Watchmen), you know that he LOVES the visual art aspects of filmmaking and manages to mash SO much amazing art and magic into his films that at times it's almost TOO MUCH Beauty for our little eyes to handle. Well, his new film "Sucker Punch" which comes out March 25th, is no exception. Getting the chance to work alongside Zack Snyder, production designer RIck Carter (Avatar)and their band of geniuses was one of the most amazing and inspiring experiences I have had as an artist and fan.

With the movie opening in a few weeks, you can get a sneak peek all of the behind the scene antics and magic of the film in a new book from TITAN BOOKS showcasing the "Art Of Sucker Punch", which contains a TON of gorgeous concept art, sketches, screen shots, promo art and some stunning photography and portraits from Clay Enos of "Watchmen:The Portraits" fame!

And, there are a nice chunky handful of pages of some of the aspects of the film that I worked on!

So I have been lucky enough to be graced with multiple episodes of exciting news as of late, with the upcoming Sucker Punch movie being released, the great reception to my recent VERTIGO show (which i haven't forgot about putting up more pictures from, I have just been CRAZY busy) and now THIS!

Tomorrow night, TUESDAY, FEB 15th (technically Weds morning) I will be making my very first network television appearance on LAST CALL WITH CARSON DALY!

The Last Call show was EXTREMELY supportive and I am excited (but awkwardly nervous) to see how it turns out. But nonetheless, it would mean the world to me if you are able to either tune in tomorrow night, or set your DVR's to catch it! And also on the show that night is long-time maniac filmmaker KEVIN SMITH!!! Crazy. So yes, please check your local listings, but i believe it is on everywhere at 1:35AM but it MIGHT BE EARLIER in some time zones so please check.

As you may or may not know, we are fueled and influenced by a ton of pop culture. Whether it's the absurdity of what our bleak, silver and stupid future looks like according to the Black Eyed Peas on the Superbowl, what Scooby Doo Villain could take on Kilmer's Batman in a fight, or watching Freedy Krueger's 18th time cockblaocking someone's fantasy, every bit of it trickles into our creative lives. THIS IS THE BIGGEST THING TO COME TO A RETAIL STORE SINCE THE FUCKING FURBY!!!

As you know, we at Zerofriends have been wrangling a little experimental circus all throughout 2010, setting up temporary retail locations in a few different cities in order to introduce our brand to different communities and mingle with the local artists and basically just dance like maniacs and display and sell some artwork. Well, we went from NY to SF then to LA and we are finally taking a break for a minute (and probably ONLY a minute because we hate breaks) and the LA retail store is coming to a close this Sunday, Jan 30, 2011, marking an end to a year of complete amazingness and madness. Thank you everyone for the support, and thank you to all of our friends who helped us along the journey. We are gonna pop-up again soon in another city, but that will be figured out in the near future. Where do you guys want to see us go?? Let me know. SO, AS OUR FINAL ESCAPADE ALONG THE AMAZING "MOVIE KNIGHTS" ADVENTURE, THIS IS HAPPENING!

Yes, it is. Alongside its director and star, Michael Paul Stephenson, I am hosting a screening of "BEST WORST MOVIE" at the Zerofriends LA Store as the send-off to 5 months of incredible "MOVIE KNIGHTS" Gatherings. We have been lucky enough to have guests, artists & writers like David Hayter, Skinner, Robert Bowen, Jon Schnepp, Tara McPherson, Dave Correia, Steven Daily, Chet Zar, Stephen Reedy and more.
And now could the planets quite possibly have lined up at a better time than this? Well, now that Pluto is gone, DEFINITELY not, but I'll take what i can get! When I first laid my eyes upon "Best Worst Movie" while on the Sketch 4 Sketch tour, at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, sitting alongside the Zerofriends dudes, Skinner, and Justin, I had no idea what to expect. Within 5 minutes, I was literally in love with an intangible product.

"Best Worst Movie" is a documentary chronicling the lives of everyone involved in the making of "TROLL 2", a late 80's direct to video movie that has been deemed "THE WORST MOVIE OF ALL TIME" by numerous sources. And as you will see, the magic that unknowingly forged from each individual involved in its creation could NOT have happened with even a slightly different team. This film is what any story-driven documentary should use as a template for realizing that story. Not since King Of Kong have I cheered and shuttered and rooted this much during a documentary. And it is my pleasure to be able to watch it and present it to you for FREE alongside the film's director himself (AND star of TROLL 2!) Michael Paul Stephenson. So come out, hang out, say hi, eat some pizza, watch a rad movie, and maybe we will even answer some questions and give out some prizes or something if you want:)

And now, i present to you the madness of the opening, and just a handful of some of the amazing 3F's (friends, family & fans) that came out to support. It was pretty exhilarating. Stay tuned for part 2 tomorrow!:) Beware, when I get excited, I put my arm around people. which means most of these pictures look the same. But fuckit, side hugs WIN!

NOTE: I collected a lot of photos from a few different friends and online sources so thanks everyone for taking photos. They are kinda mashed up, but photos are all by Sam Graham, Clay Enos, Maggie West, Paul Bustamante, Bobby Hundreds, and myself.

The insane homie Ekundayo was on-hand, hopefully telling everyone that Zerofriends is gonna release a new series of limited prints of his art VERY SOON!

Linkin Park's Joe Hahn was actually the ONLY person who was REALLY EXCITED that my arm was around him.

Second VERTIGO opening + SIGNING & MEET'n'GREET SATURDAY!

Attention everyone who is awesome:

1. I am still GLOWING from the response and the support of my "VERTIGO" show that opened last week at the Corey Helford Gallery. Seriously. I can't thank each one of you who showed up, or helped spread the word online, read the "Verti Parker" story, or just smiled at the giant walking Building-Monster painting. You all collectively made this show the best show I have ever done. So THANK YOU.

2. I have collected and edited a TON of pics, and will upload a whole summary probably Monday. It was INCREDIBLE the amount of supportive friends and fans came out to say hi to The Molar Bear (above) and I. More soon.

3. Sorry if your Zodiac sign changed today. Stop crying though, because now you might actually be compatible with the person that you wrote off for no reason other than because the stars kind of told you. Yay! Call them up!

4. The line to get in wrapped around the block ALL night. Unfortunately, there is a city-wide curfew at 10PM in Culver City and so exactly at 10PM, the cops closed the door, meaning that over 200 of you did not get into the show or get to say hello. Which sucked, and I apologize for that.

5. To make it up (hopefully it is not an inconvenience to you), I am trekking RIGHT back down to LA this weekend for a small SECOND opening and Meet'nGreet/Signing at the Corey Helford Gallery. Here is the info, I am sorry to make you come out twice, but this will be a fun little event, as we were not doing any signing/sketching at the last opening, so this one is SPECIAL.

6. ALSO, I am bringing a ton of ZEROFRIENDS merch and we will be setting up a little section of the gallery to buy shirts, prints and other stuff so thats even MORE special. Double win from a double chin.

After 3 months of prep and 500 gallons of blood, sweat and mostly tears, it's finally(Verti)GO TIME!

My brand new solo art exhibition, "VERTIGO: A Decade of Hunting Nightmares" opens at Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City, CA, tomorrow night, Saturday Jan 8th at 7PM-10PM! CLICK HERE to go to Corey Helford's website for all of the gallery info.

Though the details below contain everything you need to know about the show (minus some magical moments that will be revealed at the show on Saturday), they are far from short, but are definitely sweet. Let's start this madness in my favorite activated Wonder Twin power form: SIMPLE QUESTION AND LIST FORM!

1. Q: How much new art will there be?

A: 13 brand new acrylic on wood paintings, plus some crazy installation piece to go along with the "story" of the art show.

2. Q: What do you mean, "story"?

A: I created an in-depth story about a famous game hunter-turned-exorcist that would act as inspiration for all of the visual elements of the art show. If you wanted to know more about the story and about Verti Parker, the game hunter who is the inspiration for the show, you can CLICK HERE to go read Verti's entire origin story that leads into the art show on a website specifically created to share Verti's story, or you can jump down to the bottom of this post and read the way-shorter all new summary of the epic tale!!!

3. Q: Will I get anything for FREE just for showing up?

A: Funny you should ask, because YES! The first 500 people to come to the opening will receive a FREE print of the above image on the flyer! For reals. For free! It is Corey Helford Gallery & my way of saying thank you for helping support my biggest and best show yet. And oh yah, FREE TACOS MADE OUT OF GENUINE MONSTER MEAT COLLECTED FROM VERTI'S HUNTS!

And as an EXTRA bonus, my good friend, director of Hatchet & Frozen, Adam Green, is going to bring a few autographed Hatchet 2 theatrical posters and giving them out to the first 5 people to show up to the show in a Hatchet Army shirt!

4. Q: Why is this show such a big deal to you?

A: Well, all of my shows are big deals to me, but this represents a number of landmarks. Showing at a fine art gallery as prestigious as Corey Helford is something I have never had a chance to do before. Also, for the first time ever, I have painted using acrylics, which is a huge new direction for me. Most of my previous work has been watercolors & inks. And I built all of the wood panels that I painted on by hand, which makes them full of love. There will also be actual artifacts on display from Verti himself, as well as a surprise little monster that may have been unfrozen and shipped over to the show at the last minute. Lastly, Verti's "story" and the whole universe surrounding him and the nightmares is my favorite story I have created to date and I want to share it with everyone in the world.

Short Summary of Verti Parker's origin and how I came up with the inspiration for the show:

While in a small fishing village in Finland in 1985, world famous game hunter Caleb “Verti” Parker stumbled upon a strange occurrence that led him to believe that a special composition of music, when played at the correct pitch and speed, could lure nightmares out of the minds of the people who suffered from them and materialize these nightmares into the physical world.

As Verti had grown bored from years of hunting every game animal known to man, the sheer possibility of monsters manifesting into reality from peoples’ nightmares excited him. He realized he could hunt these creatures and have entirely new adventures while also helping to rid these nightmares from from the minds of the victims who had been suffering from them. Verti began feverishly researching and testing his theory.

Over the course of many years, he obsessed over sound and created several odd musical instruments which he would test on volunteers who had been experiencing vivid nightmares on a regular basis. Most of his instruments failed, however his most ambitious creation, a specially crafted music box, succeeded beyond his expectations. Verti’s theory had been proven correct. As he would turn the crank continuously on the box, a melodically eerie sound pattern would emerge from its speaker and float through the air surrounding Verti’s dreaming patient. The frequency of the sound reaching the patient’s ears would conjure the nightmare out of thier mind and force it to materialize in front of Verti. From this moment forward, the fight was on...

Verti continued to travel the world with his music box and a small team of associates, exorcising nightmares from those stricken so badly by the visions that their lives had been destroyed. Over the course of ten years, Verti had encountered a wide variety of monstrous creatures, each one offering a new challenge more invigorating than the last.

Because of the nature and secrecy of his work, little official documentation had existed about Verti’s adventures and the nightmares he exterminated until Verti crossed paths with Horace Chalem, a self-proclaimed “historian of the extraordinary.” Horace and Verti became close friends, and Horace, realizing immediately how “extraordinary” Verti’s experiences had been, wrote a 500 page biography documenting Verti’s entire life leading up to his unannounced retirement in 2009, when Verti simply packed up his life and relocated without so much as a simple note saying where he had gone. Horace passed away that same year, before he got a chance to publish Verti’s biography. When Horace’s house was cleaned out, Verti’s biography, along with hundreds of other extraordinary historical tales, was sent to Mexico City to be catalogued in “el Archivo de Obras Inéditas” (the Archive of Unpublished Works), where they were to be filed away and likely lost forever. But in June 2010, artist Alex Pardee was visiting Mexico and stumbled upon the Archive, where he ended up spending the entire duration of his trip discovering its numerous strange articles and absorbing as much inspiration as he could from diaries, songs, and other misfit documents that had been long since forgotten. It was there that Alex read Horace Chalem’s entire biography of Caleb “Verti” Parker. And it was there that Alex fell in love with Verti Parker’s mysterious world of nightmares and made the decision to dedicate the next six months of his life to translating some of Verti’s most horrific “nightmare extractions” onto canvas to share with the world in hopes that Verti’s discovery and his adventures would find a new life amongst a new audience of people eager to be inspired by the extraordinary.

If you follow my Twitter or Facebook, you know that I torture myself endlessly with de-voiding myself of sleep so that I can double up the amount of hours in the day. That makes sense right?? Well, to counter a lot of the madness, I started drinking coffee. I was never much of a coffee drinker until lately. I started with the gateway drug that is Frappucinos, then segwayed into mochas, then to Chai lattes, then to iced coffee, then to straight up wonderful roasted organic beauty. So, as someone who can attest to coffee (while maybe not being the BEST substitute for sleep I can find) being insanely clutch in work situations, and as someone who loves helping out any organization if in even the smallest way possible, I recently teamed up with one of the best photographers in the world, CLAY ENOS, who also happens to run one of the coolest charity programs ever called the ORGANIC COFFE CARTEL, where he travels the world to find the BEST organic roasted coffee beans, teams up with artists to design the labels, sells ULTRA limited packages of both the coffee and the removable, numbered label/print, and donates all of the profits to various charities around the world. Clay Enos and OCC really are some superheroes. WIth that being said, I highly suggest you take some time to check out OCC's limited coffee/art packages (there's a beautiful one from Molly Crabapple) and try out some of Clay's personal picks of wild coffee from his wild adventures. And I don't use the term wild loosely. The dude dives all over the world in a Vespa, befriends local villages, hunts for coffee beans, and fights savage beasts in the wild that mistake his Vespa for a large turkey leg. The "VERTIGO" story begins to unravel

Not much has been revealed yet about the direction of my upcoming solo art show, "VERTIGO" at COREY HELFORD GALLERY in LA on JAN 8th, 2011, but that will slowly change over the next couple of weeks.
What I can say as of now, is that my entire show is inspired by the famous big game hunter from Kenya named Verti Parker. And over the next couple of weeks, I got authorization and access to, for the first time, publish some excerpts from a previously unpublished biography written about Verti, by historian Horace Chalem. So make sure you bookmark this new website and follow the story of Verti Parker as it unravels, giving a glimpse into the new world that will be unveiled at my show on Jan 8th. Enjoy:)

And I was also lucky enough to have some good friends put together a nice little video of my experience, which really WAS one of the coolest days of my life. NASA + PURELL = ZEROFRIENDS??

If you are even a little bit close to me, or have followed me on my TWITTER PAGE in the last year, it's no secret that I rarely shower, but am simultaneously OBSESSED with hand sanitizer. I seriously have even considered eating it in place of brushing my teeth, and the only reason I haven't, is because I am still a little mesmerized by the stuff. I mean, I have paint and grime on my hands consistently and one of the reasons I love hand sanitizer so much is that it is obviously made from magical Wizard-Sweat because it LITERALLY MAKES DIRT DISAPPEAR. I have no idea how. It doesn't just push dirt around, it evaporates it like an awesome laser gun, and it does this all while smelling great and feeling refreshing!
For 2 years, from 2005-2007 I had even made a make-shift Purell Dispenser/Harness out of duct tape and excitement that was a permanent fixture in my car until I used it so much it practically disintegrated itself. There is still duct tape residue on my glove box. Anyway, yah, I love that shit. And I'm constantly referencing it or making awesome sanitizer jokes and photoshop pics, like this one, depicting a variation that I wish existed so that I did not have to wash my HAM every time I eat it:

Anyway, because of this publicized love for hand sanitizer, and because STEPHEN REEDY has been directing the shit out of some rad short films and commercials for Zerofriends, we (Stephen, Me & Zerofriends) have been getting asked numerous times to take a job pitching a new marketing direction for Purell. And although I assumed it meant I could get enough free Purell to finally substitute showering forever by sleeping in a waterbed filled with Purell and finally destroy my syphilis, we have passed on every occasion because, passion aside, I'm not too sure if Purell fits my brand. That is, until today, when NASA ANNOUNCED THAT SOME BACTERIA CAN SURVIVE IN SPACE OFF OF ARSENIC AND STUFF! That seemed like a perfect segue into our new relationship with my favorite beverage, Purell! Because of our connections with the #1 magical Bacteria killers, we got word a little early from Purell & NASA about this discovery and we got to workkkkkkkkk, and the new campaign was launched a mere 7 HOURS after NASA announced that life as we know it is now changed! First, let's get a rundown of all of the awesome madness that is ensuing at the ZEROFRIENDS LA Retail Store this weekend:

As the brilliantly designed flyer above states, MY FAVORITE ARTIST in the ENTIRE UNIVERSE will be making his first appearance at the Zerofriends LA store THIS SATURDAY and signing & sketching alongside Craola! Hah! See what I did there? Alright, that was my attempt at boosting my confidence. Didn't work, so let's just get to the facts.

What about FRIDAY, you ask?! Well Friday evening is going to slap you in your visage with a whole loaf of hardened AWESOMEsauce, as we are doing something that we have never done before and we are super excited about it.

Basically, if you follow Chet Zar, easily one of the best monster painters in all of the land, and someone who I have looked up to for years (I actually had seeked him out for advice years ago when I got hired as art director for The Used to get a little guidance as he had worked with bands for years prior, and he was my advice-wizard and I will forever love him for that:), then you most likely have seen his ongoing live-tweeting art project called #FridayNightArtDorks, which basically invites twitter users who are working on art on Friday nights to share their progress and work with each other via Twitter. Every Friday, Chet shares sculptures, color studies, collabs with his father, and drawings, and he has started a really cool cult of us artists who like to share stuff with each other for inspiration on those cold Friday nights.

So you know what Chet is doing THIS FRIDAY!? He is hosting the very first IN-PERSON #FridayNightArtDorks at the ZEROFRIENDS LA Store!

The event is open to anyone who would normally be stuck at home or in the studio working on art on a Friday night. Don't stay at home this Friday, come down and work on your own art alongside Chet and other art-dorks! There will be zombie movies being shown and maybe even some snacks so you don't neglect yourself and die.

Not everyone has to paint or work, of course, but it would be that much more fun if you all do. The idea is to create a fun creative night and share techniques, inspiration, and jokes with other artists and friends. You can start a piece here, bring one you've been working on to finish, etc. We also want to encourage you to Twitter your progress from the night. BRING YOUR OWN SUPPLIES THOUGH, PLEASE!!! NO ART SUPPLIES WILL BE…SUPPLIED.

Chet is an amazing painter and an amazing person so this is basically a rare opportunity to hang out, draw, and absorb some Chet-sweat!

Lastly, since we are talking about the store, Stephen Reedy has been doing a phenomenal job at hosting Movie Knights and everyone has been having a blast. No official Movie Knights event this week (though we will play movies at Chet's event) but stay tuned as you don't want to miss out on the next one. I mean, last week, at the ROBOCOP night, we had an "I'D BUY THAT FOR A DOLLAR" Sale where everyone got to buy this brand new Robocop Monster print for A DOLLAR!
